Change-Deftones Lyrics And Meaning

I've watched you change Into a fly
I looked away
You were on fire
I watched a change
In you
It's like you never
Had wings
Now you feel
So Alive
I've watched you change
I took you home
Set you on the glass
I pulled off your wings
Then I laughed
I watched a change
In you
It's like you never
Had wings
Now you feel
So alive
I've watched you change
It's like you never
Had wings
Look at the cross
Then I look away
Give you the gun
Blow me away
I've watched a change
In you
It's like you never
Had wings
Now you feel
So Alive
I've watched you change.
Now you feel Alive
You Feel Alive I've watched you change
It's like you never
Had wings

Oh Great,I Didnt Want To Do This Song At All,But I Cant Think Of Any Toher Songs,This Is The Song That Makes Me Go Into My Most Depreesive Of Depressed States,This Song Is Very Slow Paced,It Talks About How He Was Going Out With A Perfect Girl,Then Something Happened And They Broke Up So She Changed Tremendously And He's Singing About How She Had Wings And Now Its Like She Doesnt...,It Just Reminds Me Of The Girl I First Loved Because After Some Stuff Happened And She Changed Very Much,I Still Do Love Her Today But Itll Never Work Out,Anyways.

Opinions are various, but it is pretty clear that this song is based upon an acid trip with someone special whom has never experienced such enlightenment
{Like you never had wings, and you feel so alive} another key point to make is the verse {I watched you change into a fly, I looked away and you were on fire} trip on 'cid and its so obvious as to the meaning of this. Ahhh finally watch the music vid and observe the people.DITTO!!!!!

It is about being with a women, she was good at first. She grew wings, went away. And the man was obsessed with her emotionally tried to change her " I took you home set you on the glass I pulled off your wings than I laugh" He finally loses her and he is reminising (however you spell it) on how he lost her, how she changed.

In the lyrics he mentioned "i pulled of your wings".
I am guessing that he must have done something terrible that she "changed". Now that he realizes what he had, all he could do is watch her change.

I know i am not on the money but everyone has their opinion

I agree with it being about a Lost Love that left for bigger things (another man (the bigger better deal), far away job, etc.). The change is a negative change in the woman (in the Left Behind's opinion) as she flies away from him. She used to care for him and more pure and loving ideals, but no more. "She was on Fire" can mean two or both of these things: that after he looked away in disgust once she changed, everything was going ridiculously well for her (given the fact she loved and left him) and/or she embedded herself in the sins of man (namely selfishness). Thus, "It's like you never had wings.. And you feel so Alive." Then once that opportunity was gone from her (more than likely the bigger better deal (bbd) part), he took her back ("home") bc of his obsession w/ her. "Put her on the glass" is having sex w her and being able to see right through her in the first moments of taking her back. Since the bbd is gone and NOW she'll have him again, there's a lot of resentment in his heart. She still has the chip on her shoulder from leaving (her wings), so he breaks her heart for retribution by immediately having sex w/ her and a pursuing a sin-filled relationship rather than treating her like the woman he once loved. This is bad for both of them but he just laughs (in satisfaction and cynicism). Then guilt sets in as time goes on and he looks to God to be stronger, but SHE is his world again (looks away from the cross). Even after their emotional abuse and f***ed up relationship he wants to stay w/ her still, so he gives her the power to 'end' him. "Give you the Gun.. Blow me Away" is a metaphor for him allowing her to do whatever she wants with their relationship, his life, and his love (once again but to an even greater extent since it's the second time around). This is the deepest part of the song. I'm actually in a very similar situation with my First and Only Love. An older, richer acquaintance came into the picture while we were broken up (was in the middle of getting back together after a break) and she just went along w/ it. She abandoned a lot of our mutual friends and really thought she was hot s#!t once her and her bbd started dating. I told her he'd leave her, and when he was done, he did. She's actually about to graduate from our university and he left right before that! Now I can tell she wants 'us' back, and I've actually been going to Church to fill the Void in my heart and find greater strength. A part of me wants to "tear off her wings" but I'm not so morbid. Another part wants to give her power over me again... but NO WAY am I getting shot again. I believe the key is not to "put her on the glass." Finding out who she really is again and seeing if I'd even want her now (since she has most certainly changed). The thing they don't tell you in the song is she will ask you to do it.

I feel it's about finding a good basically innocent girl (hence having wings) and turning her bad and out of control, with drugs, sex, etc. (No wings).

Obviously It's about a woman experiencing her first orgasm 'I watched a change in you it's like you never had wings' He gave her the most amazing experience any woman could possibly imagine in her wildest dreams and now she's no angel, shes a little devil in bed. 'Now you feel So Alive' because who doesn't feel the most alive during the most incredible orgasm?! 'I took you home set you on the glass I pulled off your wings then I laughed' this is self explanatory he took her home set her on the glass table took off her 'wings' clothes or an angels innocents he laughed in excitment of what her was about to do to her. 'I look at the cross then I look away give you the gun blow me away' here he feels as if he has to look away from the cross because he knew what he was about to do to her was awfully sinful and he is obviouslly reffering to his 'member' as a gun.

Well this is totally my peronal interpretation but in my case its pretty accurate, experinced my first orgasm to this song. Thanks Eric for the phenomenal experience!

The meaning is in the eye of the beholder. There is an interview that was done with Chino and he explains how the song was composed, he states himself that it can be interpreted by others. I see alot of ways it can go. Yes it could be love, they meet are happy, blissful in that love= growing wings, can fly, never feel so alive. Then watching that change a fear sets in, she will fly away, so he becomes abusive (rips off her wings). He feels guilty for what he has done= (look at the cross). wants atone so he lets her go =(hand you the gun, blow me away) it hurt him to let her go/killed him. Also another way to view this song is drug addiction. Watching somebody get started on heroin, (the change that makes them feel like they have wings and can fly) but heroin being the dirty nasty drug it is, is why he sees this person turn into a gross fly, not something beautiful like a butterfly. He tries to cut this person from his life because he cant watch them die. (i looked away you were on fire) later he scared enough of this person dying so he brings them back into his life, (i took you home) delicately tells them i love you your going to die (put you on the glass) so he locks them up forcing them to detox (i pulled off your wings) laughed to keep from crying (i laughed). prays to god for the strength to endure and help this person (i look at a cross)as the person has a relapse so he says take this gun just kill me now because you are killing me by forcing me to watch you die, (give you the gun, blow me away). So in the end it all depends on how you interpret it but with love and drugs as it was suggested i see it that way.

Both of your views had more to do with the song than any other I've found so far for sure. The only thing I feel differently is I think he introduced this person to the drug or lifestyle that's changing them.

I feel this song is actually about abuse. How he changed the girl by harming her in an abuse filled relationship and eventually he felt guilty of what he has done to her so he wanted to die. Looking at the cross then looking away is related to his guilt in his sins he has committed towards this woman and he let her free from all he has done. That's just my interpretation

I think he knows he ruined her. She was kept under his control in abuse and they both had a toxic relationship. Removing her wings is taking away her freedom..... so is trapping her in a glass. He knows her every move and he's ensured she can't get away. It's kind of like "if I can't have you no one else can." He realized he destroyed her since she's changed then feels remorse. He decides he will let her go but hed rather die for that to happen.

Youve never done L before have you? Theres a lot of songs that use metaphors and other shit like that, the meaning is more like changing someone for the worst since this isnt a very happy song in the first place i doubt its about a trip. Its more like having someone try something for the first time (like a drug) then you watch get addicted and become a junky. "like you never had wings" is like saying they were a decent person, they had potential and after getting them addicted they become even less than what they were. They are like a fly

I actually agree with this. Exactly what I thought the first time listening. So odd how we are the only 2 that seen it this way and everyone else sees it as bad or drugs lol

Haha I totally agree.
